U.S. Draft Framework Seeks Sovereign Bases in Greenland

(MENAFN) The United States is preparing to assert control over parts of Greenland by designating them as sovereign military base zones, The Telegraph reported late Wednesday, citing a draft agreement between US President Donald Trump and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte.

The proposal, discussed during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, is viewed by European officials as a maneuver to sidestep Trump’s earlier threats to annex the entire Arctic territory from Denmark. Both Trump and Rutte acknowledged that the framework remains unfinished.

According to media, the draft would authorize Washington to establish bases in Greenland that would be treated as US territory in the Arctic. The arrangement mirrors Britain’s treaty rights to maintain two “sovereign base areas” in Cyprus. The US already operates an airbase on Greenland’s northwestern coast under a 1951 accord.

Media reported that the plan also contains provisions to extend the US Golden Dome missile defense system into Greenland. In addition, the deal would grant Washington rights to mine rare-earth minerals without requiring local permits.

“It’s a deal that people jumped at, really fantastic for the USA, gets everything we wanted, including especially real national security and international security,” Trump told reporters on Wednesday.

Rutte told media that his meeting with Trump marked a constructive opening, stressing his focus on cooperating with the US to strengthen Greenland’s defenses against external threats.

Shortly after the talks, Trump announced he was abandoning plans to impose new tariffs on European nations resisting his claim over Greenland.
