TRNC Leader Denounces Attack by Greek Cypriot Groups

(MENAFN) Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Tufan Erhurman condemned an incident in which groups from the Greek Cypriot Administration targeted civilians in a park near the border in Lefkosa.

Erhurman urged both the UN and the Greek Cypriot Administration to urgently investigate the attack. Around 1:30 p.m. local time, stones and improvised explosives were thrown from the Greek Cypriot side at TRNC citizens in the Yigitler Bastion area.

He stressed that the attack occurred in a sensitive zone under shared responsibility of the Greek Cypriot leadership and the UN Peacekeeping Force, and criticized the lack of preventive measures. Contact has been made with UN forces and southern counterparts regarding the incident.

Erhurman emphasized that the TRNC will ensure that Greek Cypriot authorities carry out judicial proceedings against those responsible. The attack coincided with gatherings on the Greek Cypriot side commemorating the founding of the EOKA organization.
